Finance Minister Mohammad Yasser Barnieh and Central Bank of Syria Governor Safwan Raslan took part in a high-level workshop for finance ministers and central bank governors, organized by the Arab Monetary Fund in Abu Dhabi under the title 'Macroeconomic Resilience Amid Geopolitical Turbulence.' The session was held on the sidelines of the Arab finance ministers and central bank governors meetings, coinciding with the Fund's fiftieth anniversary.
During the first session, which addressed policymaking amid geopolitical uncertainty, the Finance Minister said Syria's economy continues on its recovery path despite regional tensions, projecting good growth this year and over the next two years. Barnieh explained that Syria's response relies on fiscal discipline and institution building, and that it is financing the budget through real sources while strengthening transparency.
He noted that the 2027 budget will, for the first time, include a medium-term fiscal framework.
The minister pointed out that Syria's needs exceed its available domestic capacities, praising the support of regional partners and welcoming the call to establish a multi-donor fund to support development and rebuilding in Syria.
Barnieh chaired the second session, titled 'Strengthening Coordination Between Monetary and Fiscal Policies Amid Rising Global Uncertainty,' stating that such coordination forms the cornerstone of Syria's recovery path. He explained that the Ministry of Finance and the Central Bank of Syria are reinforcing consultation and dialogue between them, working together on several fronts to enhance financial stability.
He stressed that the success of this coordination requires clearly defined authorities and responsibilities, along with credible fiscal rules and consistent communication.
The Finance Minister called for strengthening Arab logistical and financial cooperation, stating that the need for such cooperation today is greater than ever.
