Finance Minister Mohammad Yasser Barnieh held a video meeting on Wednesday, 12 August 2026, with a team of managers from Bank of America to discuss cooperation opportunities in the Syrian market. Syria's Ministry of Finance described the discussions as positive in a statement published on its official Telegram channel.
During the meeting, Minister Barnieh stated Syria's commitment to building a strong and transparent financial sector aligned with international standards, with particular emphasis on compliance with anti-money laundering and counter-terrorism financing requirements, which form a core prerequisite for integration with global financial institutions.
Bank of America officials expressed their desire to visit Syria and continue dialogue in the coming period, exploring broader cooperation prospects. This signals interest from an international financial institution in the Syrian market at this stage.
The meeting forms part of a wider pattern of international financial engagement. Earlier in the same month, on 9 August, Minister Barnieh met with Jonathan Burke, the US Treasury Assistant Secretary for Terrorist Financing and Financial Crimes, to discuss matters of mutual interest, foremost among them Syria's return to the global financial system and the steps required to facilitate that reintegration.
