Maintenance completed on the Arab River siphon

The Latakia Water Resources Directorate, in coordination with the Syrian Construction and Building Establishment, has completed maintenance works on the Arab River siphon in the Northern Plain sector, after years out of service. The Ministry of Energy says the structure supports an irrigation system serving more than 1,000 hectares of farmland.

Structure and works

  • Length of the structure: 130 metres.
  • Build: reinforced concrete pipes with an 800 mm diameter.
  • Because the siphon lies on the riverbed, crews pumped out accumulated water with a 4-inch pump and cleared soil and sediment from inside the pipe.
  • An access road was cut to the site and a pipe culvert installed to drain water, allowing machinery to reach the work area.

Why it matters

The ministry states the rehabilitation raises the readiness of irrigation infrastructure, improves service to the farmland it supplies and secures irrigation water for crops. The announcement does not give a cost, funding source or completion date.
