Damascus International Airport Development Project
Work on the Damascus International Airport development project has intensified during 2026, as the airport undergoes a radical transformation in management, services, and infrastructure to become a modern gateway consistent with the influx of international investments.
1. Management and Operation (Strategic Transformation)
- Investment Contract: The tasks of managing, developing, and operating the airport have been handed over to the private company "Iloma" under a long-term investment contract with the Syrian General Establishment of Civil Aviation.
Revenue Distribution: The Civil Aviation Establishment receives 25% of the revenues, while the investing company receives 75% in exchange for committing to all development and maintenance works
3. Modern Services and Facilities
- Duty-Free Zone: A major expansion of the duty-free areas to include international brands (especially following the recent economic opening).
- Hotels and Services: Work is underway to establish a modern 5-star transit hotel within the airport premises and to develop business lounges (VIP Lounges).
- City Connectivity: There are studies to link the airport to Damascus city center via a high-speed railway line or by developing the current airport road into a "smart road" equipped with integrated services.
4. Strategic Significance
- Transit Hub: The project aims to restore Damascus Airport as a regional hub connecting East and West, especially with the return of major Arab and international airlines to the airport.
Air Cargo: Air cargo lounges have been developed to support export and import movements, enhancing Damascus's position as a commercial center in the region
