Meeting Overview and Key Discussions

Qutayba Qadish, Director of International Cooperation at Syria's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, received a delegation from the World Bank Group to review the progress of joint projects and discuss mechanisms for following up on new initiatives planned for the coming period. The meeting forms part of sustained cooperation between the two sides in support of Syria's recovery and rebuilding efforts.

The discussions also covered a number of projects currently under development, aligned with plans to support recovery and rehabilitate vital sectors and infrastructure across the country.

Acknowledgment of Outgoing Regional Director

During the meeting, the Syrian side extended its appreciation to Jean-Christophe Carret, Director of the World Bank's Middle East Department, in recognition of his efforts throughout his tenure, on the occasion of his transition to new responsibilities within the institution.

Approved Projects in Water and Health

The meeting took place against the backdrop of a significant expansion in cooperation between the Syrian government and the World Bank in recent months. In April, the Bank approved financing for two projects as part of a broader package of 11 projects under preparation:

  • Water and Sanitation Project: valued at $150 million, targeting improvements to water supply and sanitation networks.
  • Primary Healthcare Project: valued at $75 million, aimed at developing primary healthcare services.

Electricity and Public Financial Management

The World Bank had previously approved financing for two additional projects:

  • Electricity Transmission Network Reform Project: valued at $146 million.
  • Public Financial Management Support Project: valued at $20 million.

Sectors Under Preparation

The Syrian government continues to prepare additional projects targeting several key sectors, including:

  • Education
  • Energy
  • Digital transformation
  • Social protection
