The General Authority for Civil Aviation and Air Transport has confirmed that rehabilitation works at Qamishli International Airport are progressing steadily, in accordance with the highest technical and international standards, with the aim of returning the facility to full operational capacity.
Alaa Salal, the Authority's Director of Government Communications, stated that the airport's reopening represents a pivotal step in strengthening air connectivity and supporting economic and service activity across the Jazira region of northeastern Syria. He added that the project reflects the government's commitment to serving the local population, facilitating their movement, and meeting their humanitarian and livelihood needs, thereby reinforcing state institutional presence throughout the region.
Rehabilitation works were formally launched on 25 February, when specialist teams began earthwork levelling operations around the runway and apron areas, bringing them into conformity with internationally adopted standards and laying the groundwork for subsequent rehabilitation phases.
The Authority had taken over management of the airport on 22 February, in implementation of the agreement concluded between the Syrian Government and the Syrian Democratic Forces. Senior technical officials subsequently conducted a field inspection to assess the airport's operational, technical, and infrastructure status, ahead of developing a comprehensive operational plan.
Qamishli International Airport occupies a strategic location in Hasakah Governorate and features a runway of approximately 3,600 metres capable of accommodating a wide range of aircraft, including large cargo planes. The airport holds a capacity of hundreds of thousands of passengers annually under normal conditions, and serves as the sole air link between northeastern Syria and the rest of the country's governorates.
