The Aleppo Directorate of Education announced on Wednesday, 22 April 2026, the completion of repair and rehabilitation works at five schools located in the southern Aleppo countryside. The initiative is part of ongoing efforts to rebuild educational infrastructure in conflict-affected areas and provide students with a safe learning environment.
The schools where works have been completed are: Kusaniya, Rasm al-Ays, Sheikh Rahila, Sheikh Ahmad al-Gharbi, and al-Kamari.
The Directorate confirmed that rehabilitation works are still underway at three further schools, namely al-Buwabiya, Karasi, and Sheikh Ahmad al-Sharqi, with no specific completion date announced.
The rehabilitation programme encompassed a range of technical interventions, including:
The Directorate stated that the objective of these works is to prepare the schools to receive students within an appropriate educational environment that supports the learning process.
These efforts come against the backdrop of a damage and needs assessment study published by the Ministry of Local Administration on 27 March 2026, conducted in cooperation with the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat).
Field surveys revealed that 1,477 schools across Aleppo Governorate have sustained varying degrees of damage, ranging from partial to total destruction, representing approximately 50% of all schools in the governorate. The figures underscore the scale of the challenge facing authorities in rebuilding the education sector.
The works form part of the Directorate's broader strategy to reactivate damaged educational facilities across the governorate's rural areas, ensuring students can return to school under adequate conditions and that educational continuity is restored in communities affected by years of armed conflict.
