Damascus-Daraa Road Lighting Project

This project covers lighting on the Damascus–Daraa international highway, the main land route linking the capital with southern Syria and with the Jordanian border at Nasib. Lighting is one of the measures to improve traffic safety on a road that SANA counts among the most important routes for land transport and trade between Syria and its neighbours, and on which traffic accidents are frequent.

In October 2025, SANA reported that the Lighting Directorate of Damascus Governorate was carrying out extensive rehabilitation and maintenance on the stretch that starts in the Nahr Aisha area of Damascus and heads towards the Daraa highway, to make the road safer and give drivers a clearer view, particularly after dark.

Lighting is also part of the highway rehabilitation contracted by the General Establishment for Road Transport at the Ministry of Transport; according to SANA, its scope covers lighting infrastructure as well as resurfacing, safety signage and road markings. Details are given in the update below.

UPDATE 22.09.2026, LIGHTING IN THE HIGHWAY REHABILITATION CONTRACT

On 9 February 2026, during a tour of Daraa Governorate that included the international highway, Transport Minister Yarub Badr announced an emergency maintenance project for the road, covering road markings and new traffic signs to make it safer, according to SANA.

On 28 July 2026, the minister said that the rehabilitation projects for the international roads, including the Nasib–Damascus route, involve repaving and equipping the roads with every traffic-safety element, among them lighting, signs, crash barriers and road markings, according to SANA.

On 13 September 2026, Enab Baladi quoted the Ministry of Transport's media director as saying that the contract's improvements centre on helping drivers see the road, with modern traffic signs and dedicated lighting networks at intersections and major junctions, and that the state is funding the works in full from the general budget.

On 22 September 2026, the General Establishment for Road Transport at the Ministry of Transport and Kuwait's Combined Group Contracting Company (CGC) signed the contract for the maintenance and rehabilitation of the Nasib–Damascus international highway, with the Minister of Transport and the Governor of Daraa in attendance. According to SANA, the contract covers about 100 kilometres of four-lane road, is worth roughly USD 46.8 million and runs for 400 days; its scope ranges from new asphalt and the repair of damaged stretches to road markings, safety signage and the infrastructure for lighting.
