Bio
Locally known as Al-Rashid Bridge, the New Raqqa Bridge is the largest and most modern bridge spanning the Euphrates River in Raqqa. Designed to accommodate heavy loads and dense commercial traffic, it serves as the primary strategic node connecting Raqqa to other major Syrian governorates (Damascus, Aleppo, and Deir ez-Zor). It was the backbone of the region's economic and freight movement
Damages
In early February 2017, the bridge suffered catastrophic destruction due to heavy airstrikes (by the US-led Coalition) aimed at cutting military supply lines. The direct bombardment destroyed the bridge's central spans, plunging massive concrete sections into the Euphrates River. This total severance completely paralyzed heavy commercial transport and fully isolated Raqqa from its southern countryside, drastically exacerbating the humanitarian and economic crisis
