Melbourne hosted the official launch of the Syrian-Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SACOC) on April 10, 2025, in an event attended by senior officials and business leaders from both countries, underscoring growing momentum behind strengthening Syria-Australia economic relations.
The chamber comprises eleven expatriate Syrian businessmen operating under a special license issued by the relevant Australian authorities. It is chaired by Syrian-Australian businessman Marwan Dabbagh, who stated that the body will work to advance trade and bring together the collective efforts and expertise of the Syrian community in Australia.
Talal al-Hilali, Director General of the Syrian Investment Authority, described the launch as a significant turning point in bilateral relations. He noted that the chamber would establish direct communication channels between investors and business leaders in both countries, helping to accelerate investment activity and the exchange of opportunities. Al-Hilali also highlighted that Syria's investment environment has become increasingly open to both domestic and foreign investors.
Dr. Adel al-Shamari, Head of Investor Support at Syria's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said the Syrian community in Australia has emerged as an active force in advancing strategic cooperation, adding that business leaders from both sides can serve as a genuine bridge for economic exchange and long-term partnerships.
The SACOC launch follows the earlier establishment of the Australian-Syrian Business Network (ASBN) in Sydney, reflecting a broader trend of diaspora-driven institutional efforts to connect the two markets. Its founders position the chamber as a central platform for entrepreneurs interested in rebuilding and investment opportunities in Syria.
