The Marjeh Square (Martyrs' Square) rehabilitation project in Damascus is part of the vision of the Damascus Governorate and competent authorities to develop the historical and urban center of the capital. The project aims to preserve its heritage value while improving its traffic and service efficiency.Key Pillars of the Rehabilitation and Development ProjectRestoration of Historical Facades:* Rehabilitating and restoring heritage buildings surrounding and overlooking the square (such as the Al-Abed building and Ottoman-era structures).* Removing visual distortions and unifying commercial signage according to visual standards that suit the heritage character.* Unifying and maintaining the wooden, plaster, and stone elements (Damascene Ablaq stone) of the facades.Infrastructure and Service Utilities Upgrades:* Upgrading sewage networks, stormwater drainage, electrical wiring, and underground telecommunications.* Servicing and re-operating fountains, water features, and green islands surrounding the central monument.* Installing modern lighting systems (with a shift toward solar-powered systems) to highlight architectural landmarks at night.Traffic Management and Public Space Organization:* Improving traffic flow at major intersections connected to the square (such as Al-Nasr, Al-Thawra, and Khalid ibn al-Walid streets).* Repairing sidewalks, expanding pedestrian zones, and equipping them with benches and shaded area.* Regulating kiosks and informal parking for cars and minibuses to reduce congestion.Integrating the Square with Tourism and Heritage Routes:* Linking the square within a comprehensive plan connecting it to the entrance of Souk Al-Hamidiyah, the Citadel of Damascus, and Old Damascus to revitalize the city's cultural and tourist corridor.
