About the project
A project to remove and manage rubble in the cities of Daraya and Douma in Rural Damascus, supported by the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Centre (KSrelief) and carried out in cooperation with the Syrian Civil Defense and the Daraya City Council. Its launch announcement in December 2025 targeted the removal of at least 85,500 m³ of rubble (about 46,500 m³ in Douma and about 39,000 m³ in Daraya), together with a rubble recycling unit in Daraya aiming to recycle about 30,000 m³ into building materials.
Rubble recycling unit in Daraya
- The unit was set up in three stages, starting with the supply of crushing and sorting machinery, which has been operating for about four months.
- A mobile crusher imported from Türkiye through KSrelief can be moved once work in Daraya ends to other sites such as Douma, Zabadani and Jobar, alongside separate machines for producing building materials.
- Rubble that is at least 70% clean is recycled; rubble mixed with waste, plastic and soil is hauled away.
- Trial production of blocks, interlocking pavers and road medians began after the crushing and sorting stage was completed.
- The recycled material is used for roads, sewer backfill, electrical cable trenches and road base layers, and a new road in Daraya has already been paved with it, saving transport from quarries about 27 km away.
Progress so far
- According to the Syrian Civil Defense, 84,000 m³ of the 85,000 m³ had been removed from Douma and Daraya as of 13 August 2026.
- About 12,000 m³ of rubble has been crushed and sorted for use in service projects, and the project has created more than 35 jobs.
Current stage
The project is under way: the crushing and sorting stage in Daraya is complete and trial production of building materials from recycled rubble has begun.
