Al-Tuwaina Pumping Station Rehabilitation, Afamia Complex

About the Project

The Water Resources Directorate in Hama (Al-Ghab centre), in cooperation with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), is rehabilitating the Al-Tuwaina pumping station in the Al-Ghab area of rural Hama, as part of the plan to restart the Afamia water complex. Works began in late August 2026.

Complex Components

• Afamia dam
• Two main pumping stations
• An irrigation and land reclamation scheme covering about 3,000 hectares of farmland in the Al-Ghab plain

Objectives

The works follow several years in which the complex was out of service. They aim to raise the efficiency of the irrigation system, provide a sustainable water source that supports stable farming activity and higher output, and reactivate water infrastructure in the area.

• Water Resources Directorate in Hama – Al-Ghab centre (under the Ministry of Energy): implementing body
• Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO): partner in the rehabilitation works

Current Stage

Rehabilitation of the Al-Tuwaina station is under way.
