About the project

A project to rehabilitate the Al-Babiri water station in the east of Aleppo Governorate, which entered service in 1988, to improve irrigation services and support agricultural production. On 4 November 2026, during a coordination meeting, Aleppo Governorate discussed the station's technical needs, rehabilitation priorities and funding opportunities.

Scope of rehabilitation

  • Rehabilitation of the pumping system.
  • Rehabilitation of the electrical equipment, including 12 electrical transformers.
  • Support for irrigation and farmland reclamation projects in the Safira and Maskana areas and the south of Aleppo Governorate, amid scarce water resources and declining rainfall.

Funding

The World Food Programme announced an allocation of $600,000 to support the project, with the possibility of increasing funding to about $3 million, depending on the outcome of consultations and the necessary administrative approvals. Participating organisations discussed opportunities to contribute to the rehabilitation works and to coordinate current and future interventions.

Current stage

Participants agreed to form a joint working group of the technical bodies and organisations concerned. It will prepare a plan covering technical needs, estimated cost and implementation priorities, and follow up on funding opportunities, and will hold a further meeting to complete the technical and financial discussions and define the implementation steps.
