Bio

Zamalka is a densely settled suburb east of Damascus within Eastern Ghouta. Historically an agricultural and suburban district, it became a major opposition-held neighbourhood during the Syrian conflict and experienced prolonged siege, bombardment and armed clashes. Severe infrastructure collapse and population displacement transformed Zamalka from a vibrant suburb into an area of extensive ruin by 2018.

Damages

As of the most recent public assessments, Zamalka remains in a post-conflict rebuilding phase with many structures either ruined or in need of major repair. Returns of former residents have been partial; demining, removal of rubble, restoration of water/electricity and housing rehabilitation continue but are constrained by funding, access to building materials, and legal/ownership complexities.
