Bio
Bab Sba‘ (Bab al-Sibā‘) is an old, densely built Homs neighbourhood east of the Citadel that historically connected the citadel and markets to residential quarters. The area is known for narrow streets and traditional houses. During the Syrian conflict it experienced front-line fighting, sieges and damage; some blocks were heavily hit while other sections remained partially intact.
Damages
Bab Sba‘ is important historically and socially: it formed part of Homs’ medieval urban fabric linking the Citadel, main mosques, and commercial souqs. The neighbourhood historically functioned as a residential and market hinterland for the Old City, hosting community services and small workshops. Its proximity to the Citadel (Qal‘at Homs), al-Nuri Great Mosque and other heritage sites made it strategically significant during battles for city control — which is also why it endured intense damage. Restoring Bab Sba‘ is culturally important to recover Homs’ urban character and to reconnect displaced residents with livelihoods near central markets.
