Al-Sham Humanitarian Foundation announced on 30 September 2026 the opening of ten schools it rehabilitated in Rural Damascus and Homs, in a project funded and inaugurated by the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Centre (KSrelief).

Launch of the Project

SANA reported on 13 May 2026 that the foundation had launched the project, with works starting at Suleiman Al-Rajab School in the town of Al-Ghanto in northern rural Homs. The project aims to return students to school and improve access to basic services in the affected areas. It covers four schools in Homs and six in Rural Damascus. The Homs schools are:

  • Al-Samaklil town school
  • Suleiman Al-Rajab School, Al-Ghanto
  • Abdul Qader Hallaq School, Taldo
  • Talbiseh Industrial School, Talbiseh

Works, Cost and Selection

The works include painting, carpentry, water and sanitation connections, furniture and solar power systems. Engineer Yahya Asfour of the foundation told SANA the project was expected to take about two and a half months at an estimated cost of $700,000, and aimed to bring about 6,000 students back to school after extensive war damage to the schools disrupted their education.

Executive Director Rami Rajjoub said the schools were chosen in coordination with the Directorate of Education and local bodies, prioritising the most damaged and those most important to keeping education going, and called the project the start of a wider series of educational and humanitarian projects.

Openings in September 2026

SANA reported on 27 September that the foundation and KSrelief, in coordination with the Ministry of Education, had opened the Commercial School in Haran al-Awamid in Rural Damascus after rehabilitating and equipping it. Its principal said about 500 students returned to it after attending another school.

SANA reported on 28 September that Homs's education directorate had opened Suleiman Al-Rajab School in Al-Ghanto, one of the Homs schools listed at the launch, after rehabilitation funded by KSrelief. Its principal said the school now takes about 950 students in two shifts.

On 30 September, the foundation announced that KSrelief had inaugurated the ten-school project in Rural Damascus and Homs, in the presence of the Saudi ambassador, KSrelief's Syria director and the governor of Rural Damascus, and that the schools were opened after the rehabilitation works were completed. The announcement does not name the schools.

KSrelief's Wider Programme

SANA quoted KSrelief's Syria director on 28 September as saying the centre's school rehabilitation programme in Syria covers 60 schools and benefits more than 50,000 students.

About the Organisations

SANA describes Al-Sham Humanitarian Foundation as a non-profit, non-governmental organisation founded in 2011 that carries out humanitarian projects and services for the most vulnerable groups in Syria and Turkey. KSrelief was established in May 2015 and is based in Riyadh.
