Syria's Energy Ministry Discusses Cooperation With IRENA

Syria's Ministry of Energy discussed, on Wednesday, September 2, cooperation prospects and support for the energy sector with the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), following the acceptance of Syria's membership in the agency.

Meetings in Abu Dhabi

The Deputy Minister for Planning and Institutional Excellence, Ibrahim al-Adhan, held a meeting with IRENA Director General Francesco La Camera at the agency's headquarters in Abu Dhabi. The two sides discussed possible areas of cooperation, focusing on supporting policy development in the energy sector and strengthening the ministry's technical and institutional capacities in the coming period.

Extended Talks

Al-Adhan also held a series of meetings with the agency's Chief of Staff, Antonio Bernardini, and its Middle East and North Africa officer, Abdullah Abu Ali. The talks focused on developing capacity-building programs for ministry staff, supporting the sector's technical and institutional needs, and enhancing its readiness.

Boosting International Presence

Both sides affirmed the importance of activating the Ministry of Energy's presence in international organizations, in order to help close gaps and meet technical and institutional needs in the coming period.

Earlier Water Studies Agreement

Separately, on August 27, the Ministry of Energy signed, as part of its efforts to develop the water sector, a technical services agreement for preparing studies for an integrated water, desalination, and transport project. The agreement involved ACWA Power, the Saudi Water Transmission and Collection Company (WTCO), with Germany's Fichtner serving as technical consultant, aiming to prepare the studies and consultancy work required for the project.
