The Syrian Building Information Modelling (BIM) Framework was announced at the close of the AIREX 2026 forum in Damascus. It is intended as a guiding reference to help companies, institutions, and government and educational bodies adopt and apply the methodology under unified standards.
Eng. Wahbi Muaz, a BIM consultant, said the framework is the result of work by a specialist committee formed about a year ago. Its aim was to produce a guide explaining how BIM is applied in Syria and setting out the requirements and procedures for using it in institutions and engineering projects.
Muaz explained that the framework goes beyond defining the concept. It describes how to apply BIM at the level of companies and institutions and at the level of the individual project, helping to organise work stages, define responsibilities and unify execution procedures. According to Muaz, the guide covers:
Muaz noted that the guide draws on international standards, led by the ISO 19650 series on organising and managing information using BIM. He said this aligns local engineering practice with internationally accepted requirements and supports the ability of Syrian companies to work on projects that require these standards.
Muaz said the initiative comes alongside national capacity-building efforts, noting that more than 400 Syrian engineers have been trained on BIM and its standards in recent months. He stressed the importance of continuing to train engineers and of plans to develop local skills so they can apply the methodology in engineering projects.
The framework is a step toward a single reference for applying BIM in Syria. Its practical effect will depend on adoption by engineering firms and institutions, the provision of training for staff, and the conversion of its guidance into procedures applied in projects.
